Pimp My Crib

I am so glad it's Monday!  Why?  Because, when our furniture flipper Martin Hodgson of Pimp My Crib sent me today's flips, I was so excited about them I almost couldn't wait for today to show them to you!  I know you will love them just as much as I do!

Martin is based in the United Kingdom and has been making children's themed beds for years.  Last year he decided to try his hand at cribs, too.  He took a second hand crib and decided to make a sample one.  (Martin stresses that when making one to sell he always uses a new crib.)

He worked his magic on it and turned it into a carriage, fit for a little princess.

Here it is all ready for paint.

And here it is finished...

Isn't that fantastic?  Can you imagine having that in your child's nursery?  Wow!  Amazing.

Wait, there's more!

This next picture Martin sent shows a complete nursery full of furniture he created.

What a lucky little baby Indianna is!  Speaking of Indianna, I have been trying to get somebody in my family to name their future daughter that!  I have been trying for what seems like FOREVER!  So far, nobody has.  I'm still hoping.  (They could call her Indy for short!)

Martin is a fulltime dad who pursues his craft on a part-time basis.  He keeps pretty busy with his orders.  Check out these other themed beds he created.

What lucky children to slumber in these beds.

Look at the one with the slide.  You'd never get your kids out of their rooms!

Thank you so much Martin Hodgson for sharing your incredible talent!

You can check out more of his work on his Pimp My Crib Facebook page.

How's that for a start to the week?  Have you submitted your furniture flip yet?  I hope you do!  Email me before/after pics and plenty of details to furnitureflippin@gmail.com .

I Present To You King Charles...

Don't get your hopes up Duchess Of Cornwall Camilla, I'm not talking about your husband.  Not placing bets on when he'll get that throne.  Nope.  "King Charles" happens to be the name of today's most magnificent furniture flip.

Now, we've all seen benches made out of beds.  We've even seen rocking chairs made out of beds, "wink, wink" (our Triple Rocker).  The bench I'm going to show you today is pretty darn awesome.  I saw it and couldn't wait to show it to you!

The only problem is, there is no "before" pic.  I'm making an exception today and breaking that rule because this is just that cool.

Today's creation is courtesy of Jenniver of The DORE To LAWRENCE, located in Canyon Lake, California.   This was only the fifth piece that Jenniver made.  The four previous pieces were a test of sorts, to see if she had the gift.  (She does!)  When she saw two separate sale ads on Craigslist, one for a headboard, the other a footboard, she decided to bring them together and create this...

Isn't that unique?  I've never seen a bench quite like that one.  Jenniver has been branding her work with a handstamped copper tag.  Each piece is numbered.  This piece was the first one that Jenniver started numbering, it's number is 2013.1 and she is now up to #2013.174.  She has been busy.

Head on over to The DORE To LAWRENCE'S website for more of her work.  She is in her third year of business and her work includes furniture, handmade clocks, wine barrel pieces and much more.  You can also visit her on her Facebook page.  Let her know you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.

Thanks so much Jenniver for sharing the details of this fabulous bench!

Get your flips in people!  You don't have to be into furniture for profit, it can be flips you've done for yourself.  Let's see what you can do!  Email me before/after pics & details to furnitureflippin@gmail.com .
See you tomorrow!

One Door Closes...

...and another one opens.  And, still another one languishes outside with his buddy against a wall not doing a gosh darn thing.  (I know some guys like that, too.)

Well, that's about to change!  Because Joanne from Funky Junk Home Decor in Newfoundland has a hold of you now and she has a deadline to meet!

Our heroine Joanne entered a local magazine's upcycling contest.  However, her dad fell ill and she missed the deadline by 12 short hours.  Not one to let that stop her, the project she had intended to enter went forward anyway.

(Who needs to win a stinkin' contest anyway?  I know you're a winner Joanne!  You don't need a magazine to tell you that.  Now the entire universe will know!)

Hehehe...I can hear a conversation taking place right now..."Who does this Stephanie on this little blog think she is?  Does she really think she has the eyes of the entire universe reading her blog?  She must be mad out of her mind!  I think maybe she's hitting the bottle!"  Well, let me tell you MOM!  Maybe I do!  Just maybe I do!  Would that be so hard to believe?  Just kidding.  My mom doesn't read the blog.

Joanne took the door & headboard and set about transforming them into the ultimate upcycled piece.  She cut the headboard in half to use as the sides.

For the seat she used an old board that was too damaged on one side to do much else with.  Never fear - underside it went!  Unless you are up under that chair dusting you're never going to notice that.  (Because let's face it, who has time to dust under their furniture?  Not me!  Maybe you do, and if that's the case, come on over!  I've got a whole houseful of furniture with your name written all over it in dust.)

My Matthew
Oh!  That reminds me!  I have to tell you about a few weeks ago when I asked my 14 year old son to dust the dining room furniture.  I call it Teen Lesson #1 For 2016 - if your mom asks you to dust then do it correctly without complaint. Why? Because if you give attitude you will find yourself assigned a different job, in another room, that has a door that can be closed so your complaints can't be heard. Such was the scenario on that day. The end result? Mom did the dusting. The teenager? He had to thoroughly clean the bathroom - toilet, tub, sink, mirrors, floor, woodwork, etc. Lesson learned.
As Matthew Saw Me When He Was 7

Some days dear readers its so much fun to be the Mom!

Back to the flip.  Joanne painted this with Country Chic Paint in licorice and added a few hooks plus a place to pin notes and photos.

Check it out!
Isn't that great?  Knock, knock!  Who's there?  A door.  A door, who?  A-door-iable that's who!  Because it is!  It's both fun and functional!

I love it!  Thanks so much Joanne for sharing your upcycled furniture flip!  I agree with Joanne that it makes a great entry piece.  Might I suggest that it would also be a great place to write, "You're Grounded" when your kids come home late one night.  It'd be the first thing they see when they walk in the door.

You can find Joanne on her Funky Junk Home Decor Facebook page.  There you will also get to see much more of her awesome talent on display.  She also has a store in Newfoundland and their grand opening was this past weekend!  She is also not only a user, but she's a dealer of Country Chic Paint, too.  Go check her out.  Tell her you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.

This week is off to a great start.  Have you submitted your flip yet?  We have some wonderful ones coming your way this week.  If you'd like to share your furniture flip, just email me at furnitureflippin@gmail.com .  Before/after pics and all of the info you'd like to share.
Have a great Monday!

The Triple Rocker Epilogue

You remember our Triple Rocker that my handsome handy husband and I made?  Well, it's stylin' now!  It's all decked out.  If you aren't familiar with it, let's take a look back at what became one of our most popular projects here at Furniture Flippin'.  The bulk of this post dates back to September 2013 when we first showed it to you.

One neighbor's trash...is OUR TRIPLE ROCKER!!  Thank you little J & S for prompting your parents to upgrade your sleeping situation to a set of bunkbeds.  First of all, I was a child at one time, too.  (If you ask my handsome handy husband (Triple H) he will tell you I still act like a child from time to time.  It's part of my charm, I tell him!) And as a child, I shared a set of bunkbeds with my little brother Michael.

Yes, my dad frequently called me Stevie Joe until his boy was born.  As the only male child with three older sisters, it was Michael's duty to torment us (me).  I being the closest in age to him became his victim/best friend.  I recall one morning waking up in my bottom bunk to find a fake plastic vampire bat hanging from his top bunk right in my face.  Good times!  Good times!  So, bunkbeds and siblings are a right of passage.  Have fun with them neighbor boys while WE (Triple H & I) have fun sitting on our front porch rocking the night away in our triple rocker made from your old discarded bed.

We spotted the bed about a year ago, I'd guess, in the neighbor's trash.  A quick call confirmed it was free for the taking.  So, we grabbed it.  It silently stood in our garage until this summer when it's number was called and work began on it's transformation.
We used the headboard in it's entirety.

The footboard, however, was cut and became the sides of the triple rocker.  Not in half, mind you, because that would have made for too deep of a rocker. The newel posts on the footboard were removed and saved for another project down the road. We framed the rocker with wood we had salvaged from an old project.

There's the framing in of the seat.  Look at our Heavy Metal Industrial Entertainment Center peeking out behind it!  (Buy me for your Man Cave!  I'm one of a kind!)

At this point we started discussing options for the armrests.  That's when I remembered my little $3 table I had picked up when shopping for The Park Ridge Project.  It was a short table at 17".  Not really a practical height for a table if you ask me.  Weird really.  I suggested we use the table top for the armrests.

Those table legs we saved for another project some day.  Or a sword fight among kids would be fun, too!  Always use your imagination people.

After cutting the armrests, I sanded and stained them while handsome handy husband made the rockers...
Putty was used to fill in the areas where the headboard originally attached to the side rails.  The chair went up on the lift and the rockers were applied.

Then of course we had to test it out and it rocked!  (We still see you peeking out from behind there you awesome head bangin' former dumpster dresser!  We love and adore you.)
Now that the construction was pretty much completed, it was time for yours truly to do the finishing work - painting & staining.  Fun, fun!

While the bed was made from Maple, the table top turned armrests were Hickory.  I couldn't paint over that beautiful woodgrain, and as I mentioned above they were stained.  The rest was all painted black from our paint stash.  Then distressed and stained with an aged oak gel stain from our stain stash.

As is our way, whether it is a remodeling project or a furniture project, we ALWAYS sign our work.  I hope I'm a ghost one day (in a 100 years would work) and can see the reaction of the future occupants of our home when they find all of the little notes hidden inside the walls of this old house.  Then once they discover them, I'll jump out and yell "BOO!".

I tend to leave longer notes if it's for the house's future owners or ourselves.  I wouldn't normally leave such a long note on a furniture project to sell.  This rocker is a keeper, thus the wordiness hidden under the seat.

That was it.  After all of that work our neighbor's former bed was turned into our Triple Rocker.  Here she is in all her glory...

Some close-ups...
We love this rocker.  We imagine rocking many a night away in it.  Let's take one more look and then that's the last you'll hear from us on this until we make the next one.

If YOU have a furniture flip you'd like to share with our readers, please feel free to email before & after pics with all of the details to me at furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  If you have any questions on any of the flips we feature here, also don't hesitate to email us.  If it's not one of our flips, we'll put you in touch with the ones who did flip it.

Finally, if you haven't subscribed yet by email to the blog, do so today!  We'd hate for you to miss out on all the cool furniture flips we share.  Only a small fraction are ours, the rest all belong to YOU talented people.  Thanks for coming along with us on this fun project.  Furniture Flippin' Facebook friends were treated to updates along the way.  We appreciated your support and encouragement throughout this Triple Rocker Project.

Oh, handsome handy husband - YOU ROCK!  Without your carpentry skills this would just be a bed taking up space in the garage.

UPDATE - July 2014 - Okay let me just tell you this...the Triple Rocker is totally awesome.  We love it madly.  However, it was totally uncomfortable.  Was being the operative word.  No longer though!  Thanks to our dear friend Elly of Elly's Custom Upholstery (located in Green Cove Springs, Florida) it is now all dressed up with a custom cushion and matching pillows.  I selected the indoor/outdoor fabric from swatches that Elly carries and she created this beautiful cushion.  Now it's comfortable to sit and rock on.  Check it out...

Isn't it gorgeous?  I can't wait to sit out there on my porch and wave at all of the speeders and people who drive by while talking on their cell phones.  I'll have a better view of them now, seeing how the cushion is 3" thick and Triple H also shortened our too-tall front porch railing by a few inches.  I may even be able to get license plate numbers now!  Hehehehe...have you made YOUR Triple Rocker yet?  Send me a picture of it if you have!

Oh No! There's No Before Pic!

First things first.  Did you MISS me yesterday?  Did you even NOTICE there was not a fresh blog post waiting to greet you first thing on a Monday morning?  Well, there wasn't.  I was so excited about the nice weather we were having over the weekend that you couldn't drag me inside to write if you tried.  Instead, I made huge progress on our Circa 1915 Dresser - affectionately referred to as the $5 Dresser.  You may recall it was last Wednesday when I gave you a sneak peek at the top that I was stripping of it's incurable veneerial disease.  (She tells that joke every.  Single.  Time.  She.  Talks.  About.  Bad.  Veneer.)  Yes, I do.  Get used to that about me.

But, this post today isn't about me, it's about Natasha of Trash & Treasure Creations.  Here's the problem though.  Our lovely Natasha did not take a BEFORE picture of the flip I'm going to show you.  Did she have time to take a before picture?  Why, yes, she did.  Seeing how she had this very dated king size headboard languishing around her workshop for OVER A YEAR after purchasing it for the small pittance of $30 from a thrift store, I'd say she had PLENTY OF TIME TO TAKE A BEFORE PICTURE.  Wouldn't you?  Hehehehe...Sorry, Natasha...but you knew I'd have to give you a hard time about not snapping that pic.

While this piece might have waited a tad bit for inspiration to strike, once it did in the form of this Peacock feather, Natasha wasted no time in bringing her vision to life.

She knew she wanted to make a bench from the headboard but intended to make it shorter (the headboard measures 6 1/2 feet long). Since it was in great structural shape, Natasha realized that taking it apart in any way would be quite the challenge. So, she decided since her color scheme was pretty bold, she may as well go big or go home.  She built the seat and added chair legs from another project.

She stained the seat ebony and layered on the peacock colors.  She gave some of the accents a metallic gold glaze and then sealed it all with poly.

Let's take a look at the finished piece (and the gorgeous backdrop we've come to recognize as Homer, Alaska), shall we?

And, one more picture from a different angle...

I'd say that bench was well worth the wait.  It's gorgeous.  That's one to pin to your Pinterest board!

You can find Natasha and see more of her custom built and up-cycled work on her Trash & Treasure Creations Facebook page.   There she offers small home furnishings and accessories crafted with locally purchased, reclaimed, or collected materials.  You might remember when I showed you the inferior chest of drawers that she refurbished into a superior piece of art & function.  Head on over to her page and let her know you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.

Thanks so much Natasha for sharing your amazing furniture flip!  Remember, before pic, before pic, BEFORE pic.

Dear readers, if you have a furniture flip YOU'D like to share, please feel free to email me at furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  I'd love to see what you've done.

See you tomorrow!

Sleeping Like A Log...

The poor little shoebox of a bedroom that poses as the Master bedroom in our house is in dire need of a makeover and it'll be getting one SOMEDAY.  Someday being when we aren't freezing and can open the windows and shovel out tons of lathe and plaster.  I'm not holding my breath.   I'm thinking we are in a really long episode of The Twilight Zone with this winter weather.

In addition to a major overhaul, the bed needs a headboard.  I've considered repurposing doors or making my own upholstered headboard, but now I'm liking this idea.  Check out what Amy from Found & Finished did with this fireplace mantel.

Amy has it going on when it comes to repurposing items.  Remember the Vanity that she turned into a really cool garden vanity?

On this mantel, Amy painted it with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in the color Ironstone.

She followed that up by applying Annie Sloan's Dark Wax.

Once that was finished she turned it over to her client who promptly turned this into a really cool headboard.

Check it out...

Lovely!!  You can see more of Amy's work on her Found & Finished Facebook page.  Amy's based in Georgia and is a high school teacher by day and furniture flipper by night.  She's like a super hero.  (I can only handle two teenagers at a time.  I am not of the cloth that a high school teacher or a Duggar Family member is made.  I'm just not made of that material.)

Thanks so much Amy for sharing your fantastic furniture flip!

Special thanks to my sister Rebecca for coming up with today's blog title.  Better luck next time Lee Ann!

Dear readers, do you have a new use for an old object?  Well, if it falls into the furniture category, then send it in.  Email me before/after pictures and all of the details to furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  As many details as you can type out.  The more details the better.  You can never send me too many details.  Don't forget the details.  Details on you, the before, the during, the after, what you had for dinner last night, and what you are doing right now.  Got that?
See you tomorrow!

All That Glitters Is Not Gold...

You might recall that I showed you today's featured flip a few months back.  It was the subject of one of our "What Would You Do?" features on the Furniture Flippin' Facebook page.

Our friend April of Copper Loop Creations and Designs had purchased it and once she got a really good look at it she realized, well...let me let April explain.  She has a very witty way with words so I'm letting her take over.

April, "I learned the hard way, that you can't just grab that pretty shiny thing and not look at it thoroughly.  The Blonde bed we picked up what seems like an eternity ago is finally done (maybe!). This is my first true flipped piece and boy oh boy did I pick a doozy!  What I thought was going to be a simple task to accomplish, turned into quite a job!  I lovingly called her Annette (after my sweet southern, gentile grandmother) only to find that she had an alter ego that I soon called "Hagatha".

As I started preparing the bed for a new coat of paint, pieces literally started falling off into my hands and the floor and everywhere else!  I called in my trusty, skillful ex-cabinet and furniture maker of a husband (my hero) for some professional advice. (I honestly was ready to set her out next to the road at this point).  Hubby took a look, scratched his chin and said "You need a bit of car bog" (which is Australian for Bondo).  He was off his rocker, I said to myself but I trusted him and off to Walmart we did go!  We purchased the Bondo aka car bog and he went to work.  It was a long process mixing, shaping, forming and drying but his magic worked!  Just try to find where he BONDO'd!   And I thought only vehicles got BONDO!!!

Once Hagatha dried sufficiently I began painting her.  I used a homemade chalkpaint formula that someone suggested and a marked down can of Valspar white paint.  I will definitely continue to try different formulas as this one was okay but I think I could have done better.

After I did her base coat I mixed up a batch of black glaze (another mistake) and I went to town. There is a reason why you are told to work in small areas with glaze.  It dries awful fast in the summer heat!  I rubbed and washed her all down and replaced her rusty old wheels for new muffin feet.

Finding new clothes for her has been a challenge and the hunt still continues!  She is now in her new room that is awaiting more accessories and room mates as they become available."**

(**This post was updated on September 17, 2014.  April has been hard at work on the room and it's looking fabulous!)

Thanks April!  For taking over for the day AND for sharing your very first furniture flip!  It turned out great.

Now, our friend April is a busy woman.  She works hard, recently moved to a new house and is busy setting that up, plus she has a lot of other activities that keep her out of mischief or into it, depending on how you look at it.  She has her Facebook page in the works, you can check her out at Copper Loop Creations and Designs.  It's a very new page, so let's show her our support and encourage her as she builds it up.  After all, she was great enough to share her very first furniture flip with all of us, it's the least we can do to thank her.  Head over there and give her a "like".  We can get those numbers up for her.  To quote Frank Burns of M*A*S*H*, "It's nice to be nice to the nice."  While you are at Copper Loop Creations and Designs let her know you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.

There you have it!  Another lovely makeover.  If you have a furniture flip you'd like to share, please feel free to email me all the details plus before & after pictures.  The more details the better.  Send them to me at furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .

She'll Think I Mis-Read Because I Chose The Bed!

Today's featured flip will come as a surprise to a furniture flipper in Florida.  Did she submit a flip to me?  Yes, she did.  Is it the one you are about to see today?  No, it is not.  I'll let you in on a secret.  Very rarely do I plan too far ahead.  I might have a theme one week, or a special event someone is wanting to highlight and I'll try to work a certain flip in at a certain time.  But, usually I don't have any more of an idea of what will be running that week than you do.  I actually know about 17 hours before you do.  I look through what's been submitted, pick one out, see if I have enough info from the flipper, if I don't I'll go emailing them for more details if I have time.  If I don't have time, I'll skip to another one and so on, so forth.  Sometimes I have all the info I need and not one single word will form in my wandering brain.  (I know!  ME?  Speechless?  It happens.  Although my family will say it never does.)  In that case, I'll move on and come back to it later.

In the case of today's flipper, she submitted me two very lovely pieces a month or so ago and I was going to feature one of those.  When I sat down to write, I headed off to see what she had been up to the last few days and that's when I saw this bed.  Like "The Monkees", I RAN with it!

It began as an ordinary 1920's twin bed.  At least that is what it was before Lisa from Old Soul Accents got her hands on it.

Lisa painted the bed using Paint Minerals in the color of  Homestead Antique Lace.  Then she stenciled on it in La Fonda Ortiz Gold.  She distressed it a bit with sanding and then followed it up with dark wax.

Let's take a look at the after...

And a look at the side...

Lisa says, "I found my new favorite color. Its a cross between antique white and a vanilla cream color."  I thinks it's pretty.

I bet some of our readers would like to own that bed.  Too late!  It's sold!  You can check out what else Lisa is creating on her Old Soul Accents Facebook page.  You may find something you can't live without.  She is based in Middlesburg, Florida and loves to do custom orders.

Thanks Lisa for submitting your furniture flips!  Hehehehe...hope you don't mind I pushed the bed to the front of the line.

One more flip and it's the weekend!  It could still be yours.  You see how I work.  Sometimes, it takes me awhile, other times, I'm shoving people aside to get yours on.  Just depends on the day and just depends on the flip.  Oh, and whether you give me enough pictures/info.  Email me at furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  See you tomorrow!
