...And You Shall Become A Beautiful Swan.

Have you ever been to an auction or a garage sale and purchased something like a picture frame only to find that hidden underneath is a priceless painting worth millions?  Yeah, me neither.  While today's featured flipper didn't find a "now you can retire" piece of artwork she was in for a big surprise when she purchased this upholstered stool at an auction.

Meet Leslie of Heart and Hive.  Leslie took home her stool along with other items that came in the lot she bought.  She could tell through the fabric that the foam beneath was seriously brittle.  So, like an archaeologist unearthing hidden treasures, Leslie set about removing the foam and fabric.  Was she rewarded for her efforts?  You betcha baby!

Take a look at what was waiting for her...a swan carving on a table top.

She initially thought about painting the table white but she listened to her inner artist and decided to do a japanning effect on it.  For those of you not in the know, I googled it already.  Japanning describes the European imitation of Asian lacquerwork, originally used on furniture. The word originated in the 17th century.  That's my "learned something new" for today!  Whew!  Got that out of the way early.

Leslie painted it red followed by a top coat of black.  She distressed it and then used dark Fiddes wax.  The wax brought out it's really rich colors.

Isn't that a great find?  I love the look she gave it.

You just never know what you are going to find when you start redoing furniture.  I never would have expected that to be under that fabric.

This gem of a table can be yours.  It's for sale at Heart and Hive's booth located at Plainville CT Flea Market at the Crossing.  Hurry up before it's sold.

Check out more of Leslie's work on her Heart and Hive's Facebook page.  Let her know you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.

Thanks so much Leslie for sharing your very distinctive hidden treasure of a furniture flip and for teaching me a new word.

That wraps it up for another week of Furniture Flippin'.  Have you submitted your furniture flip yet?  Email us your work to furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  Don't forget your pithy comments!  We like to hear what you have to say.  Speak now or I'll badger you again on Monday.

  4. About 15 years ago I was searching for a gift for a friend who had everything I had given up for the day and was on my way home when I spotted a man standing on a street corner with a table and a quilt and a for sale sign. I stopped and eventually bought the table for 50 bucks. I was very similar to this one only the carving was of a nude woman releasing a bird from her outstretched hand.....The table also had a framed glass top that was removable. I had a friend who is a estate auctioneer look at the table, told me it was a late 19th century "chocolate table" or serving table....It would have come from an wealthy home and would have been used in a parlor to serve desserts And that is my guess to what this find really is.
