...that's the best way to describe today's featured furniture flip!
Brittney from The Painted Piece started flipping furniture as a hobby almost 7 years ago. It was just a year or so ago that she decided to turn her hobby into a small business. Two of her friends were helping clear out an old barn when they came across this beat-up buffet and asked her to perform a miracle.
Yikes! Right? You don't have to answer. I'm calling it and it's a definite "YIKES!". You are just lucky, dear readers, that this isn't TLC and you aren't watching an episode of "Scratch & Sniff" Honey Boo-Boo. Why? Well, Brittney said this buffet smelled. Smelled BAD were her exact words to me. Stink, stank, STUNK!
She actually took this piece outside, grabbed the garden hose, some dish soap and gave it a good scrubbin'! Brittney doesn't recommend that approach for all cases but in this instance drastic smells called for drastic measures.
Once she de-stunk it, she began to see some potential in this farm fresh pick! She sanded the whole thing, removing broken wood veneer, and used wood putty for
the bad spots....LOTS of wood putty! After that, she custom created a
green color using a couple different paint samples from Sherwin
Williams for the base. She used a mixture of paint and stain for the top
to provide coverage with the look of stained wood! Finally, she followed by adding a
custom created glaze over the green. Brittney prefers to custom mix her own glazes because she admits to being a bit of a perfectionist. (That's okay with us, Brittney, I suspect we have a lot of those among us, me included.) Lastly, she clear coat sealed the piece for
durability.
Ready to see the after? Ta-da!!!
From stinky to striking just like that! Her friends were pleased and said they will treasure it forever. (On a side note, LOOK how CLEAN her floors are! Why, she wasn't kiddin' when she said she is a perfectionist, was she!)
Check out Brittney of The Painted Piece on her Facebook page. Let her know you saw her here. Also, if you live in the Batesville, Arkansas area you are really in luck! The Painted Piece is now accepting orders to custom refinish furniture
pieces. So, if you have any old, outdated or otherwise ordinary
pieces of furniture just contact her and let her turn them into something special!
Thanks so much Brittney for sharing your furniture flip!
This is beautiful. It's amazing that old piece of furniture could look so nice. I'm still trying to get the smell out of a 3 drawer chest we bought at an antique store. I've tried soap, bleach and sunshine and it still smells bad.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried baking soda in the drawers? Some people have said they used kitty litter and it worked well. Good luck.
DeleteThe smell is probably from mold. Place a dish of activated charcoal powder(found in health food stores) in each of the drawers. Close the drawers and let sit for a week, undisturbed. Check it, and if the odor still persists, replace the charcoal and let sit for another week. This should take care of the odor. If the piece will be stored, put a bar of Irish Spring soap in each drawer.
DeleteFill the drawers, cupboards, whatever w/crumbled newspaper & sprinkle some vanilla on them. The newspaper soaks up odors & the vanilla helps....I finally solved my "smell" problem in an old barber stand that had been stuffed w/old soap....ugh. Put 2 coats of KILZ on the inside, then painted over it.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your before and after 's !!!!!!!!!!!!!Makes my day. ;)
