Good Things Come To Those Who Wait...

Today's flip has been a long time in the making.  It's one of our own.  I acquired our dining room furniture from my maternal grandmother Avery.  She and my grandfather J.D. purchased it new shortly after they were married in 1938.  By the time I got it, grandma had done some flippin' of her own to it.  In 1968, she had my Uncle Larry apply a faux woodgrain finish to the table, hutch and buffet.  The hutch and buffet are a matched set.  However, the table that now shares the room with them, didn't originally belong with them.

The original matching table was damaged in a fire in 1944. During that period of time, my grandparents lived above their grocery store in downtown Crestview, Florida.  My mother Annette was a few years old.  One night my mom woke up her mom (Grandma) to take her to the bathroom.  As she entered the hallway in that upstairs apartment my mom pointed out smoke coming in under the door from the store below.  Grandma hurriedly woke up Grandpa and visiting sister-in-law Effie.  Grandpa ran to a window and yelled to some airmen heading to the bus station on their way back to Eglin Air Force Base.  The men noticed the fire in the store below and ran to assist them.  The family climbed out onto the porch roof and the servicemen helped them down to safety.  The family was safe and everything else that was lost could be replaced.  The dining room set survived.  The table had damage to it.  Grandma kept the hutch and buffet, but gave the table and chairs to her parents (my great grandparents) who repaired it and kept it for their own use.

Flash forward to 1955.  My grandmother relocated to Illinois with her husband and family.  The table stayed in Florida, the hutch and buffet came with them.  Grandma located a Tiger Oak table to purchase.  She bought it from a farmer who had it stored in a barn.  Here's a picture of my grandma that year with the table.  Funny story about that picture...it was staged.  My grandmother wanted to send pictures of their new home in Illinois back to her relatives in Florida.  So, she dressed up, pretended she was setting the table for a party and had my mom snap that picture.  (The apple which is me did not fall far from that tree.)

The beautiful woodgrain on that table was covered in that same faux finish.  Ugh.  I know.  What was she thinking?  Well, at that time it was all the rage to faux finish furniture.  (Sound familiar Furniture Flippers?)  In the late 1990's, I paid someone to strip the table and chairs back to the beautiful wood.  The hutch and buffet's time didn't come until this year.  (We knew those two pieces weren't gorgeous Tiger Oak.  We learned during this makeover, they were built with whatever wood the builder had on hand.)  I really began the makeover on them the week of Thanksgiving 2012.  I painted the hutch and didn't like how it was looking.  I stopped midway through and decided to strip it and the buffet.  Well, if you know me, and I think you might, you won't be surprised that I quickly became bored with it.  They were pushed aside for cooler projects.  Like the Pottery Barn Inspired Entertainment Center and the Dumpster Dresser.  Then the Park Ridge Project.  The Lion's Head buffet.  The Bird DresserThe Chair from Hell makeover.  And the Triple Rocker. Plus, a myriad of home improvement projects.  Patiently they waited.  Finally we got to them.  We had a deadline of Thanksgiving 2013.  We did not meet that deadline.

While it may seem that I was purposely avoiding these two pieces, I assure you there was a reason.  My grandmother had "flipped" them and that makeover lasted for 45 years.  She had no way of knowing then that so many decades later her granddaughter would be "flipping" them again.  I, however, imagine that in 40 years my future grandchild will be making them over again.  And I wanted to make sure she (or he) didn't call into question what her (or his) grandma and grandpa was thinking when they did this flip.  So, I took my time deciding how I wanted them to look.  Triple H was on me the whole time, telling me we had to get them done.  Finally, I decided I wanted to repurpose the beadboard that we had from our last 100+ year old cabinet.  You might recall we had two of those cabinets.  They originally were owned by my stepdad's aunt.  We worked one of them into our kitchen makeover.

We took apart that cabinet.  Discovering that the wood used for it was purchased locally.  In very old fashioned handwritten penmanship is written "J.C. Ames Lumber Co."   They were well known in my town beginning in 1868.  They closed in 1987.

It has since been torn down.  I always loved that building.  This building was built in 1923.  I'm not sure what the original building looked like.

We then set to work sanding and sanding and sanding and sanding.

Then repairing the repairwork on the buffet that I would guess my Uncle Larry might have performed.

Along the way we found some fingerprints that must have belonged to the original builder of the buffet.  We kept those.  They are still inside the buffet.

We removed the shelves so they could be sanded and stained.

Triple H was a super smartie when it came time to sand the original knobs.

I worked hard trying to match the stain to the century old finish on the beadboard.  I even turned to my carpenter friends for their opinions on the finish.

We then set about prettying it all up and pulling it all together.  Paint, paint, paint.  Stain, stain, stain.  Finish, finish, finish.  Once that was done, then it was onto the beadboard.

Finally, the end of this makeover was in sight.  We cut the beadboard down to size and attached it.

We also replaced the wood backing on each piece.

Then it was picture taking time...

The buffet looks beautiful with its stained top and knobs against the black.

My china pops against the old beadboard.  I love that such an old cabinet was able to be incorporated into this piece.  It gives it another layer of history to the hutch.  As if surviving a fire and making the trek from Florida to Illinois wasn't enough of a history for it.

You should know by now that my picture taking skills are limited by my lack of a good camera thanks to a certain Robin that tried to kill me.  But, you get the gist.

I really love that wood/paint combination.  I like to move my furniture around from room to room, so it'll look just as nice in the kitchen as it does the dining room.

I wish I could show you a good picture of all of the pieces (the hutch, buffet and table/chairs) inside of the house.  However my house with all of its windows and bad lighting just doesn't do them justice.  Here is a picture of the table waiting for them to return.  The poor table was without his partners for over a year.

So, there you have it.  The cobbler's kids finally have shoes!  I really love my dining room furniture.  I look at those pieces and I see so many memories when I look at them.  My grandmother had a beautiful home in a small town 12 miles from where I live now.  Her dining room was my favorite room.  She & I had a special relationship.  She was my runnin' buddy.  We'd get into all kinds of mischief together. I think that she would be proud of how we are taking care of her furniture.

That's it for today's flip.  It was a long read, I know.  So, if you didn't read it word for word, I won't hold it against you.  It was more of a way for me to chronicle this for the next generation of my family.

I would like to add that the next time you find yourself participating in the "great paint debate", think of this flip.  Think of how my grandmother applied a faux finish over beautiful Tiger Oak.  Then recall that I stripped it off to reveal that woodgrain again.  What is painted can be stripped.  Or if you feel like painting over wood, do it.  You do what you want to the furniture that you own.

This is the last flip for this year.  I'm taking the rest of the year off and will return on Thursday, January 2, 2014.  Thank you all so much for being a part of Furniture Flippin' this year.  It has been an incredibly fun experience for me.  I've met a lot of wonderful people along the way and have been inspired by all of you.
I can't wait to see what you do in 2014.

Live It Up - Take Some Penicillin and Buy A TV..and a China Cabinet

The end of the year is near and things are busy here at Furniture Flippin'.  We are finishing up a flip of our own and that, combined with the holidays has kept us hopping.  So, I'm turning the blog over to my friend Kelli of Pretty Painted Things & Other Things That Make Me Happy.  Let's check out her latest work.  Take it away Kel...

1928............That was the year this china cabinet was made (so says the sticker on the back of the cabinet).

1928 was the last boom year of the Roaring Twenties before the crash of 1929 for most of the world. Some of the most important events of 1928 were the discovery of penicillin, the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland and the Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, the sale of the first television and the election of Herbert Hoover.

Fast forward 85 years........and here we are today.  I picked up this china cabinet that was in dire need of some TLC.  The door had been taken off (I like it better with open shelves- I think it's more multi-purpose this way) and the veneer on the front had been hacked/torn off.  I loved the shape of it and immediately saw major potential.  I saw in my minds eye exactly how I wanted it to look. First I had to find some period wallpaper.  I didn't find exactly what I had in mind, but I did fall in love with the 1930's paper I found. It's a minty-blue with sweet pearly stripes and a little bit of floral.

It looks like there are several different types of wood on the cabinet - the front panels would have to have something done to camouflage where the veneer had been savagely removed. I decided on appliques.

I painted a bit of pearl ivory paint over each of them and then distressed and aged, so it does look like an authentically old piece.

It's super sturdy and may just last another 85 years. What are the events of 2013 that will be remembered as we look back? Surely they will look back in horror at this year and think twerking is as awful as I do now.  ~ Kelli

~ Stephanie back again!  Hehehehe..thank goodness for friends who come to my aid when I'm just a tad bit lax in my duties.  Let's take a look at the amazing after of this cabinet.

That piece is gorgeous.  You can see more pictures and read more details and comments by visiting Kelli's Pretty Painted Things & Other Things That Make Me Happy Facebook Page.  Be prepared to stay awhile because her work is out of this world and she will inspire you.

Coffee? Tea? Oh, Just Wait 'Til You See!

What do you find yourself reaching for when it's time to quench your thirst?  Do you do the Dew? Have a Coke & a smile? Or is your choice the choice of a new generation?  No matter where your loyalties like in the Cola Wars, you'll have to admit that THIS flip is hip!

Meet the tag team duo of Dionne & Kyle of Simply Charmed.  Recently, Kyle took on the task of making over this Waterfall dresser.

This wasn't going to be any old makeover.  He decided to totally change the look of it.  He changed it so much you will find yourself questioning whether it is really a dresser or is it actually a soda machine.  You'll think Kyle is trying to pull a fast one.

Kyle transformed this piece into a replica of an old Pepsi-Cola machine.  Right down to the bottle opener on the side.  He did it with the help of paint from the American Paint Company in the colors of Shining Seas and Home Plate.  He added some silver accent pieces and then fully waxed it.  It's nothing short of amazing.

Let's take a look at it...

It's hard to believe that if you stuck a dime in there that a bottle of Pepsi wouldn't actually appear.  It looks that real.  It's still, however, a fully functioning dresser.

Lucky person it'll be that buys this baby up!  Yep!  It's for sale.  (I can't say for how long though - LOOK AT IT!  Who wouldn't snatch that up!?!)  If you'd like to be the proud owner of this dresser, it's pretty simple.  Just contact Kyle or Dionne at Simply CharmedSimply Charmed is an arts and crafts gallery located in Gladwin, Michigan.  There you will find artwork, crafts and jewelry made by over 90 local Gladwin and Michigan artisans. You'll also find gourmet foods, candies, coffees and teas, many "Made in Michigan".

You can check them out on their Simply Charmed website or visit them on their Simply Charmed Facebook page.  Let them know you saw them on Furniture Flippin'.  Let's take another last look at this ridiculously rad furniture flip...

Thanks so much Dionne & Kyle for sharing your spectacular furniture flip!

Dear readers, if you have a furniture flip you'd like to show off just email me!  Send your before and after pictures along with a bunch of details on your piece to furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  There are just a couple more flips until we close out this year.  I wonder who will be up next?
See you tomorrow!

Their Family Increase(d) When She Bought A Two-Piece...

All of you wonderful furniture flippers are torturing me with your hutch and buffet makeovers lately.  You are a constant reminder that my own hutch and buffet are not yet done.  What's the saying?  The cobbler's children have no shoes?  Now, I really have to get on the  move and get ours finished.  Here's one more incentive for me to get with the flow and it's all thanks to Glo.  You've met Glo of Patina Pizazz before.  I introduced you to her back at the end of May when some very glamorous tables of hers were featured.  Let's see what Glo has been up to lately.

Glo wrote to me recently, "Hutches are hot right now (what’s up with that) so of course I had to get one.  I bought this two piece number from Jennie, my Annie Sloan stockist (whom I love by the way) in Hillsboro, Oregon from B Designs Home Décor.   She sold it to me AS IS for $20 bucks.  YAH, you heard me $20 bucks.  It had missing glass, missing hardware and of course missing veneer, but most of all it was missing some GLO-Glam."

Glo set to work on her.  Cleaning the hutch, removing some of the veneer in spots so she didn’t have to wood fill.  She then painted it Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and Ochre.  She found hardware that would work with the few pieces that came with the hutch.
She added more pizazz to it with the addition of black decals.  At that point Glo was still thinking she was going to sell the hutch and while the black accents would go with her decor, she thought a potential buyer might want the option of removing them.  Thus, she used decals and chose not to stencil.  The decals stay where you put them and are easily removed if you wish.

Glo thinks that deep in her heart she knew that this two piece number was destined to stay with her and her handsome handy husband.  (She lovingly refers to him as her "sexy man slave" and says he was instrumental in moving this heavy sucker around and helping her with the hardware.)  They took a family vote and decided NOT to sell.  Take a look at it and you'll clearly understand their unwillingness to let her go...

THAT is gorgeous.  I love it.  Now, it's making me rethink my entire makeover of my hutch!!  Thanks a lot Glo!

Glo says while she now has her Christmas collection of trees and things displayed in the hutch, she also loves to display fancy shoes in these cabinets.  She admits that she has one already for that purpose but a girl can't have enough shoes so this baby may be making a move from the dining room to the bedroom.

Glo writes, "There are so many uses for hutches these days so get creative.  They’re not just for dining rooms and your grandmother’s china any more."  I agree!

Let's take one more look at the hutch in its current habitat...

Thanks Glo for sharing your fabulous furniture flip!

You can find Glo on her Patina Pizazz website where you can see what she is working on and follow along with her blog.  She is based in Oregon.  You can find her items for sale at Monticello Antiques in Portland, Oregan and at Curiosities in Beaverton, Oregan.

The five pieces we showcased this week formerly looked like this...

Definitely dated, all of them.  Well, you can't pin an age on them now.

Check out their beautiful after pictures...

These extreme makeovers were accomplished by the uber-talented furniture artists behind Alchemy Vintage Market, Simple Redesign, Shabby 2 Chic, Salvaged Inspirations, and Elly's Custom Upholstery.

Hometown Pride & Staying On Santa's Good Side...

If you've met her before, then you know how she can be.  If you haven't met her before then you are either new to this blog or you just look at the pictures and don't read the verbiage.  I've featured our "Miss(us) Elly" of Elly's Custom Upholstery twice before.  Once with her bold makeover of a loveseat for one of her clients.  The second time was a sweet looking chair which was much scarier beneath it's upholstered surface

Well, Elly is a combination of sweet & sass.  She walks that tightrope every day much to the amusement of those of us who get to see her in action.  Because she is full of spunk she really has to rein herself in when the holidays approach and the guy in the red suit starts making his list.  Look how far she went to redeem herself in 1995, although I'm not quite sure what list she is going for with this picture.  You decide.  Naughty or nice?

This year Elly's hometown of Green Cove Springs, Florida came calling with a special request.  Santa Claus was coming to town and they wanted to roll out the red carpet for him.  Preparations were to include making over his old worn out chair.  This is where they turned to the upholstery expert Elly.  Here's what it looked like...

Elly knew this chair would get a lot of use and suggested they go with a faux leather.  The fine folks at City Hall agreed and asked her to make it red.  Ever trying to get on that good girl list, no matter how late in the year it is or how slim her chances may be, Elly took the task on.  She reupholstered it in a true blood red color and trimmed it out with brass tacks.

Let's see how she did...

Impeccable job as usual!  But, it's not me who she has to impress.   What does the jolly one think?
From the look on his face, I think Elly has safely secured herself another year on the nice list.  Well done Elly!  Well done indeed.

You can check in with Elly on her Elly's Custom Upholstery Facebook page.  There you'll get to see more examples of her beautiful upholstery work.  Make sure you tell her you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.  Also, weigh in on whether you think she's getting presents or coal this year.  I'm going with presents but once December 26th hits, you better look out!  There will be some serious misbehaving going on.  One last thing, today is HER BIRTHDAY!  Get over to Elly's Custom Upholstery and wish her a Happy Birthday.  Flood her page with well wishes.

Thanks so much Elly for sharing your very special furniture flip.

Okay dear readers.  Here's your invitation once again.  Feel free to email me your furniture flips.  You don't have to be a business to be featured.  Send me before/after pictures and tons of details to furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .  Be witty in your repartee and I just may run it as you send it!  Give myself a break.  Let someone else do the work for me.

Have a fantastic Friday!

Where There's A Will, There's A Way...

I have to let you in on a secret.  Well, it's not really a secret if you are one of the ones I've directed in the past to today's Furniture Flipper.  If you aren't let me fill you in...frequently I get asked a question about furniture flippin' and sometimes I answer with my own vast knowledge on the subject.  (I'm laughing just typing that sentence!)  Other times, I just reply, "Here.  Here's a link to a great tutorial on it.  I trust this lady.  She won't steer you wrong.  Now beat it.  Leave me the heck alone."  Then I send the person to Denise at Salvaged Inspirations.  Okay, so I don't tell them to leave me the heck alone.  Maybe I did tell one person that, but it might have been my sister and I was busy (goofing off) and she was interrupting my train of thought (Words With Friends move).  I bet Denise would never tell her sister to bug off.  Not after the two of them have invested so much time training her sister's fiancee Will so will, I mean well.  It was Will after all, who spotted this hitchhiking hutch and insisted they rescue it for Denise to re-do.

Denise has had good luck in the past with China Cabinets.  Remember this one we featured back in May?  Mr. Fifty Shades of Grey-Green as I lovingly like to call it?   That was also a hitchhiker.  (Where, oh, where are these pieces of furniture heading?  If I find out they were trying to hitchhike to Illinois to live with me, I will be furious.  I already have one circumventor who lives in Michigan sidelining all of the dressers.  Now, I have to worry about our Canadian neighbors, too?)
This cabinet was structurally sound but the paint job was all chipped, the backboard had water damage and it sported cheapo knobs.  All simple stuff to fix for Denise.  She gave this baby a new paint job, swapped out the knobs with handmade knobs (Yes!  Handmade!) from Jacqui at Porta Verde Studios (you saw her here just 9 days ago) and (Hang onto your hats!  This is C-O-O-L!)  she made the back reversible.  That's right!  Two looks in one!  You can choose to show the solid white side OR the stenciled side. What's even COOLER though is that the stencil Denise used is a DIY stencil that she made.  She not only made it, but she is willing to teach YOU how to make your own!  (Merry Christmas readers!  This is one heck of a blog post today you are getting.  You.  Are.  Welcome.)

First things first, let's check out the after on this hutch...

Is that an incredible transformation or what?!?  (Look at how clean her wood floors are, too.  Mine do not look like that!)  Now, here's what you need to do.  Get yourself over to Salvaged Inspirations and check out the tutorial on how she made that stencil.  She shows you step by step.  While you are there, check out what other great tutorials she has to share.  Then ask her about Stu.  Seriously, ask her about Stu.  Finally, tell her I sent you!  You can handle all of that, right?  I thought so!  You can also follow along on her adventures on her Salvaged Inspirations Facebook page but not until AFTER you check out her blog and tutorials.  You've got some learnin' to do first.

Thank you Denise for sharing your phenomenal furniture flip!

I'll give you one more look at this flip but first I have a message for my brothers-in-law, Terry & Scott:  See how Will is finding furniture for Denise and he isn't even married to her sister yet?  What's up with that?  I'm your sister-in-law.  I have been for a long time.  You are supposed to be scouting out furniture for me in your daily travels.  Get on that, will ya?
Happy 6 More Days Until Christmas Day!

From Ho-Hum To Custom...

Today's furniture flip begins with this rather ordinary china hutch.  It looks to be made of Knotty Pine.

This large piece of furniture resides in the UK.  It was there that Davena from Shabby 2 Chic found it and worked her magic on it.

She painted it using Autentico paint in the color "Canvas".  The iron scroll work and back board were painted in Farrow & Ball's "Skimming Stone".

Look at the details.  They were lost before in all of that pine.

Notice the angel wings?  Beautiful.

There you just saw two sneak peeks of this piece.  Here's where I have to tell you something important.  You know how you are going along surfing the internet and you get lost in all of the beautiful rooms you see.  You "Pin" it or "Share" the picture and imagine yourself in that room.  Well, this next picture was taken in one of those rooms.  It's a picture you are going to want to "Pin".  Not only that, you are going to want to see more of the place it was taken.

Now, let's take a look at the entire "after" picture...

From the chair, to the pillow, to the drapery, to the hutch, to the floor.  I love it all.  But, this is about the hutch today.  (Ignore the massive cabinet behind those pieces.  THAT piece you are going to want to see in the pictures on Shabby 2 Chic's Facebook page.  You will want that piece of furniture.  I know I do.)

After Davena was finished with today's makeover it sold rather quickly.  I can see why.

You can see more of Davena's work on her Shabby 2 Chic Facebook page.  You are seriously missing out if you don't check out the furniture pictures in her albums.  Her work is impeccable and the pictures are ones you will want to see and share.  Shabby 2 Chic is a family run business located in the UK.  They enjoy upcycling boring, dull and old furniture.  Taking it from something shabby to something chic and stylish for your home.  Check them out and let them know you saw them on Furniture Flippin'.

Thanks so much Davena for sharing your stunning furniture flip.

Have a great day readers!

She's Back!!!

I swear Julie from Simple Redesign is out to get me.  I'm not just being paranoid either.  Here are the reasons I think that.  She shows up a few months ago and makes me start to despise my own bathroom by sharing a gorgeous furniture flip she did.  At that time, she had taken a buffet and turned it into a bathroom vanity.  A stunning bathroom vanity.
There it is > > >  > > >

Then I'm snooping around one day.  Unbeknownst to her (or so I thought) and I find that she is a dresser hoarder.  I'm starting to think...hmmm...word on the street is that I like dressers.  They are my "thang".  She must know that.  She must purposely be snatching them all up in an effort to get to me somehow.  I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't have a whole huge operation covering her state, my state and whatever other states she happens to drive to.  Seriously, you need to check out her inventory.  She has serious hoarding tendencies.

Then come to find out she has done yet another bathroom vanity.  This time she has upped her game and made it a double vanity.  Last time it was a single.  This time it's a double.  That to me, is a passive aggressive move aimed directly at ME.  She knows I coveted the last vanity.  She knows I complained that my bathroom is too small to accommodate a cool one like that.  So, she hits me with a double.  Now this may all just be conjecture on my part, but let's take a look at her latest bathroom project.  You can form your own opinions after you do your own investigation.

Julie started with this dresser.  (Look!  What did I JUST tell you!  Look at the dressers she has lined up.  Against their will probably.  I can almost hear them calling my name.  Steffie, Steffie...)

Julie's clients had the sinks all picked out for this dresser.  That allowed Julie's handsome handy husband Marc to predrill the holes for it before Julie got her hands on it.  Once that was done, Julie made it all pretty with paint and lacquer.

They took it to their client's home and it was installed in the most beautiful bathroom I've seen in a long time.  (Where were these people when I was trolling the internet looking for inspiration three years ago when we redid our bathroom?  That right there is a little suspicious, too.)

So, yada, yada, yada.  The dresser is now a double sink vanity and here's the pictures to prove it...

Here's another one...

I have to give credit where credit is due.  That is awesomely spectacular in a big way.  No ifs, ands, or buts about it.  Genius, I tell ya, pure genius turning a dresser into something that makes all the other dressers of the world jealous.

Come closer, here's what I need you to do.  You need to go check out all of the behind the scenes stuff Julie has been up to over at the Simple Redesign blog.  She's always up to something.  Leave her a comment there, or here or wherever you heart desires.  You can also find her hanging out on her Simple Redesign Facebook page, too.  Let her know you saw her on Furniture Flippin'.  Then report back here to me everything you saw.  Take a notebook so you don't leave anything out.

Thank you Julie for sharing your righteously rad furniture flip.  That'll be one dresser please!

One last task for you loyal readers, I'm looking for some "What Would You Do?" pictures.  So, it's up to you to email me some.  Send me a picture of a piece of furniture that you have no clue what you are going to do with and we'll see what ideas we can come up with for you on our Furniture Flippin' Facebook page.  Email me at furnitureflippin@yahoo.com .
